English Language Development

We are proud to offer both integrated and designated ELD (English Language Development) instruction to our English language learners. Our integrated ELD approach means that ELD instruction is integrated into our content-area instruction, which allows our English language learners to learn the language and content simultaneously. 

Our designated ELD approach provides focused instruction that supports the development of English language proficiency.

Our Eld curriculum is aligned with state standards and includes a variety of topics that are relevant to high school students. Some of the areas we cover include:

• Academic Language: Students learn academic vocabulary, language structures, and discourse patterns that are commonly used in high school classes.
• Literacy Skills: We focus on developing reading comprehension, writing skills, and critical thinking skills that are essential for success in high school and beyond.
• Cultural Competence: We explore different cultural perspectives and help students develop the skills and attitudes they need to interact respectfully and effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

 We use a variety of instructional practices and integrated supports to help students succeed, including:

• Collaborative Learning: Students work together in small groups to practice their language skills, share ideas, and support one another in their learning.
• Scaffolded Instruction: Lessons are structured to support students at their individual language proficiency levels, with activities and assignments that gradually increase in complexity.
• Multimodal Learning: We use a variety of teaching methods, including videos, pictures, and other visual aids, to help students understand new concepts and vocabulary.
• Differentiated Assessment: Assessments are designed to evaluate students' language skills at their individual proficiency levels, and provide opportunities for them to demonstrate their understanding in multiple ways.
